Badaｍtam Tea Estate
Located 17km west of Darjeeling Town, the estate boasts magnificent views of Mount Kanchenjunga and was opened by owner and cultivator Mr. Cristine Bames in 1861. Located at a wide range of altitudes, from 300m to 1,800m, the estate produces 250 tons of fine tea per year, ranging from the early spring first flush to the mellow summer harvest and the gentle autumnal.
We also have very high standards of labour welfare for staff working on our tea estates, including housing, education, hygiene and health, and these standards and initiatives serve as a role model within the group.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Badantam Tea Estate, but one of the most likely is that in the early 19th century, a traveler visiting the area asked the locals the name of the place, and the locals, who did not understand the language, mistakenly thought the traveler was asking about the name of a bamboo water bottle he had, and answered "Badantam," which means bamboo water bottle in Lepcha language.The traveler mistakenly understood the name of the place as Badantam, and the name spread.
